Therefore, Marshall, whether they wanted to or not, devalued all the old amplifiers lying in the warehouses by launching the JCM 800 series into production, named after Jim's car license plate, "JCM 800", which in turn stood for his initials, James Charles Marshall. The JCM 800 amplifiers were introduced in March 1981 and, with the exception of the Super Bass model, were initially nothing more than the old "Master Volume" and "Super Lead" series with a slightly modified design. The appearance became more solid than before: the control panel became full-size, the front side was covered with fabric with white piping, and in addition, Jim's signature and the inscription "JCM 800" in bold font appeared on the panel.
