Mesa Boogie Stiletto Ace 1×12 Green Edition 50 w Combo In the summer of 2006, the world was filled with the sounds of another new device from California, at the sight of which every self-respecting rock guitarist will salivate. Following the very popular Mesa Stiletto Deuce and Trident EL34-powered heads, introduced in late 2004, the latest creation from Randall Smith completes this series of amplifiers, at least for the moment. So, meet the slightly quieter and more socially friendly 50-watt Stiletto Ace, which we will get to know in a 1x12' combo format. The quality of fit and finish, inherent to Mesa, has always been an example to emulate for other manufacturers, and the Ace combo is no exception. Our unit is finished in a warm green color. The finishing quality of the small details of the cabinet is impeccable: the signature Boogie style is so recognizable compared to competing firms that you will understand that this unit is released by Mesa Engineering even if you remove all its nameplates and logos. Look at the size of this combo compared to the Boogie Mark series amplifiers, and you might be forgiven for thinking that someone put only one speaker where two should be. Yes, the unit is, to put it mildly, not small, and it is also quite heavy, because the cabinet is made properly – as an isolated 'box' with top and back panels. Behind this solution is the intention to squeeze every last decibel of low frequencies that can be obtained from a single speaker standing in the Ace. Fortunately, the cabinet has built-in snap-on casters, and we think many guitarists will gratefully accept this, especially considering that the combo has only one carrying handle. The aluminum chassis and electronics are made with the highest quality typical of Mesa, work on improving which has been constantly carried out for many years in order to improve products without sacrificing the company's reputation. Like its 'older brothers', the Stiletto Ace is 'tuned' to use EL34 tubes and has two very flexible channels to set up. Both channels have a full set of controls, including gain level, treble, middle, bass controls, 'presence' and master volume, but this is just the beginning. Each channel also has a three-position tone setting switch, allowing you to choose between three main sound characters, as well as a two-position switch for selecting the type of rectifier – silicon diodes or a 5U4 tube. These switches significantly expand the capabilities of the Stiletto. On the first channel, the three tone modes are called 'Fat Clean', 'Tite Clean' and 'Crunch'. The latter mode is also present on the second channel, and the other two are called 'Tite Gain' and 'Fluid Drive'. Between the rectifier operating mode switches is a third small toggle switch, which allows you to switch channels without using a footswitch. On the right side of the front panel are the controls that most owners of modern Boogie amplifiers are familiar with. There is a master volume control and a 'Solo' volume control, thanks to which two different volume levels can be set for each mode. The power switch allows you to choose the 'Bold' or 'Spongy' setting. First appearing on the Rectifier series amplifiers, the 'Spongy' mode reduces the supply voltage to simulate the power drop of older amplifiers under insufficient voltage. The 'Bold' mode delivers full voltage, which provides more headroom before distortion and a wider dynamic range. On the rear panel, you will find everything you need to connect the Ace to other equipment. There is a serial effects loop for connecting external effects and an output jack, both with output volume controls, four speaker output jacks and two external controller jacks that can accept signals from footswitches equipped with such a function for switching channels and turning on the 'Solo' mode. The effects loop has a passive bypass switch that completely removes it from the signal path. This switch also bypasses the two volume controls, shortening its path to the speaker. The Stiletto line is a tribute by Mesa to the classic British amplification, and the Stiletto Ace is no exception. The 'Fat Clean' and 'Tite Clean' modes of the first channel give you almost everything you can expect from a clean sound.
