Guitars & Glory: Shred Virtuoso Gus G Steps In as King Diamond Lead Axeman After Andy LaRocque’s 40-Year Legacy!

Former Ozzy Osbourne six-stringer Gus G has officially been named the new lead guitarist for King Diamond. The Greek virtuoso replaces Andy LaRocque, who co-founded the heavy metal outfit from the remains of Mercyful Fate back in 1985. The duo parted on completely amicable terms after sharing a four-decade run and 13 studio albums together.

Gus G initially built his reputation with power metal acts Firewind before taking over for Zakk Wylde as Ozzy Osbourne's main guitar player in 2009, performing on the Scream record until his departure in 2017. Later on, he famously turned down audition offers from heavyweights Megadeth and Machine Head, determined not to turn into a mere "hired gun." Ever since, he has maintained a balance between Firewind and his own solo career.

Joining such a legendary metal band is a major milestone, though flexible working arrangements likely made the agreement much smoother. It represents a bold tactical move for everyone involved.

"It is a huge honor for me to introduce Gus G as our new guitarist," stated King Diamond. "Gus G will keep pursuing all his ongoing ventures, including Firewind and his solo career, without any constraints—just smart scheduling. We are already collaborating with Gus G, and I can hardly wait for the fans to hear the new material featuring his guitar work!"

In a dedicated Instagram statement regarding the lineup update, Gus G shared:

"I want to express my gratitude to everyone for the messages of love, encouragement, and support; it truly means the world to me. I want to thank King Diamond for picking me—it's a massive honor. I’m just as much of a fan as any of you guys.

I realize this comes as a shock. Andy LaRocque is a true legend, and taking over his spot will be an incredible privilege. He even reached out with a personal message wishing me success. I plan to inject my own style into the mix while fully respecting the classic music, and I am equally eager to write new material. There are so many exciting things on the horizon."

Among the musicians congratulating him in the comments section were notable guitarists Jeff Loomis, Joel Hoekstra, and Phil Demmel.

For his part, Andy LaRocque mentioned that he is saying goodbye to "a family after more than 40 years packed with incredible music, great friends, and endless good memories." He will now turn his attention toward his other musical endeavor, Lex Legion.

In an earlier conversation with Guitar World this year, Gus G reflected on his tenure with Ozzy Osbourne, discussing the Prince of Darkness' preference regarding his guitar choices and missing out on the Back to the Beginning event.
